AKRON, Pa. – Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) staff members are working with partner organizations to assess the needs of people affected by Hurricane Felix in Central America.
Felix made landfall in northeastern Nicaragua as a powerful category 5 hurricane on Tuesday morning. According to initial reports, Felix destroyed thousands of houses in northeastern Nicaragua before dumping heavy rains and dissipating over neighboring Honduras.
Hurricane Felix follows two weeks after Hurricane Dean, which struck land in southeastern Mexico and northern Belize. MCC and its partners are assessing the damage from both storms and discussing possible responses.
MCC's partners in Nicaragua include Accion Medica Cristiana, which provides health care in eastern Nicaragua, and the Anabaptist Emergency Commission, which is a partnership of Nicaraguan Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches.
More than a dozen MCC workers are currently serving in the western regions of Nicaragua and Honduras, which Felix did not hit directly. Some MCC workers reported that Felix brought heavy rains but did not cause widespread damage in their communities.
MCC is accepting financial contributions to help provide assistance to people affected by Felix and Dean. Contributions may be made online at mcc.org/donate or at any MCC office. They should be designated for "2007 Hurricane Relief."
